Hemp charcoal incense x bar manager | There's a reason to light a smoke before taking off your shoes

Apr 25, 2025

Mamiya Ryo, 37 years old, is the owner of a bar in a back alley in Kichijoji.

The last of the regulars left at 1:45.

Throw out the ice, turn off the lights, and close the shutters.

It was 40 minutes later that I arrived at my front door.

Stepping into the unlit entrance, he doesn't turn on the light or even take off his shoes.

Ryo picked up a package of incense from a wooden box on a shelf in the entranceway.

──Hemp charcoal incense from Kyoto Hemp Leaf.

Small, black cone-shaped.

A small amount of charcoal dust remains on the fingertips.

Place it in a small ceramic incense burner and light it with a lighter.

There was a crackling sound and white smoke rose up slowly.

"Let's stop here for now. Let's continue today."

After lighting the fire, they just stand there doing nothing.

Just inside the door. No lights on.

Don't take off your shoes or put your bag down.

However, at the entrance, which is the "between the outside and the inside," I wait for the smoke to quietly purify the air.

The scent of hemp charcoal incense is gentle and subtle.

It doesn't make a strong impression, but it does slightly change the density of the air.

The warmth of the charcoal fire and the transparency of coniferous trees quietly intertwine.

There's plenty to talk about at the store.

But the first thing I needed when I got home was some quiet time.

"When you use too many words, you want to reset with a scent."

Ryo muttered to himself, not to anybody in particular.

About 5 minutes.

After making sure that the smoke had slowly blended into the space, I finally took off my shoes.

After that I lock the door, put my bag down, and change into my loungewear.

For him, "going home" was not about taking off his shoes, but about immersing himself in this smoke.

No one is watching.

There is no one here.

But only I know.

This smoke will be the dividing line between today and tomorrow.

Change your mood with a scent.
